How many times have you tried to start a meditation practice, but felt like you failed?

You said to yourself
I can’t meditate.
I can’t sit still.
My mind is way too busy.
This is never going to work.
Trust me… I get it. It’s not supposed to be easy in the beginning.
Like everything else in life… The more you practice the easier it gets.

For the longest time I really didn’t grasp the benefits of meditation. Just like you, I couldn’t sit still. I had monkey mind and just felt uncomfortable. Overtime these feelings started to change and subside. I actually enjoyed sitting. I loved being still and I looked forward to silence.

When I sat unanswered questions became answered.
My mind became clear.
My life became more manageable.
I was happy on the inside and out.
I felt peace and calm.
I experienced more joy.

I want to share with you today 6 tips to create a magical and nourishing meditation practice.

These tips will allow you to cultivate a meditation practice that will serve you for a lifetime.
Be open.
Except the challenge.
Breathe and just enjoy.
Don’t force anything and just take time to feel.

Remember, this is your own personal journey.

Tip #1
Set aside a sacred space your home. It can be a corner of a room or the whole room. Get a meditation cushion or even a blanket to use for sitting. If it’s not comfortable to sit in the middle of a room then sit up against a wall. You want to be as comfortable as possible so you can stay present and engaged.

Tip #2
The sound of a bell or chime is a beautiful way to start off your practice. You can buy your own or download one onto your phone or computer. The bell is a way to ground you and set you up for what you’re about to move thorough.

Tip #3
When you sit, keep your spine and torso straight. Soften the face, jaw, and shoulders and remember just to relax. Consider smiling just a bit. A soft, natural smile will relax the face, neck, and jaw.

Tip #4
Pay attention to the breath. Be aware as you feel and breathe in. Be aware as you feel and breathe out. As soon as you find a balanced breathe and cultivate this awareness… The body, breath and mind will all come together. Each in breath can bring happiness and joy and each out breath can bring calmness and relaxation.

Tip #5
Don’t worry about what you look like. This magical and nourishing experience is about what it feels like. Remember… Progress not perfection.
Meditation is like anything else… the more you do it the easier it becomes. Start off with 5 minutes and work your way up. Before you know it you’ll be sitting 20-30 minutes like it’s nothing.

Tip #6
Treat this like an appointment on your calendar. Schedule in when you’re going to meditate. Make it a non-negosh! It’s like creating any other habit in life. I try and do my meditation practice the same time everyday. Now that doesn’t always work out and then of course I’ll fit it in at another time. You don’t only have to be at home to meditate. You can do this on the bus or metro, on an airplane, and even your desk at work. Explore any and all places.

Bonus Tip
There are so many different types of meditation. Yoga nidra, seated meditation, walking meditation, etc. Do some research and find out what speaks to you. YouTube has a ton of awesome videos for you to enjoy.
